Why a strong team drives business growth

A business can only grow as far as its team can carry it. Strong teams are built on purpose: hired well, developed, led and kept engaged.

A strong team is a group of people working towards the same goal, with a shared sense of why it matters. It is also the limit on how far a business can grow. Better people, working well together, produce better ideas, better decisions and more work done. Teams like that are rarely an accident. They are built.

Building the team

Know the strengths you have. Understand what each person does well and where they need to grow. Give people work that uses their strengths, and deliberate chances to develop the rest.

Hire for more than skill. Technical ability matters, but so does how someone will work with the people already there. A strong hire who does not fit the culture can cost more than they contribute.

Keep developing people. Skills that were enough last year are rarely enough next year. Ongoing training keeps the team able to do what the business is asking of it.

Value different perspectives. Teams made of different backgrounds and ways of thinking see more options and make better decisions, as long as everyone is genuinely included.

Leading the team

Choose how you lead. Leadership style shapes performance more than almost anything else. Leaders who encourage collaboration, communicate openly and keep attention on results get more from the same people.

Keep communication open. Teams that can speak honestly, give feedback and hear it without fear solve problems faster and trust each other more.

Make collaboration normal. When people share ideas and help each other, the team becomes more creative and better at solving hard problems.

Set goals and keep to them. Clear goals give a team focus. Holding people to them, fairly and consistently, keeps that focus alive.

Keeping the team engaged

Engaged people stay, and do their best work while they do. Engagement grows from a positive working culture with a sensible balance between work and life. It grows when people can see that their ideas are heard and acted on. It grows when there is a visible path to develop, through training, mentoring and new responsibility. And it grows when good work is recognised, formally and informally, often.

A business does not outgrow its team. Invest in the people, in how they are led and in how engaged they are, and the growth has something to stand on.
